What Should Search Engines Look at?

We all stratigize and research all day long about what the search engines look at with their algorithms, but we don't always give our opinions at what they should look at. SER now tries our hand at playing relevant search engine.

SES in San Jose

Well there is another Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference going on in San Jose this week. I have been following up on all the coverage. Seems to me to be the same stuff with a more SER touch to it. Search Engine Watch is providing complete coverage here.

The more and more I read the more I see the words 'natural' and 'relevant' being used to describe methodology. This is good in my book, but there are still lots of other still trying to fudge the numbers with over optimization and link spamming. If you have questions about this conference or need help with your site's relevancy feel free to Ask SER a question.

Relevant Outbound Linking 101

We all know about inbound links and how the search engines put so much weight on them for rankings. What is not that well known is the power of relevant outbound linking. If you think along the lines of visitors looking for information this strategy makes perfect sense for the search engines.

Why do Search Engines like Outbound Linking:
It shows you are dedicated to providing the best information even if it doesn't come from your site. It makes you look like an information hub for your subject matter.

Why it is Good for Visitors:
It is a great source for finding related topics and additional information. Gives your visitors the sense of support. This will make them come back and become return visitors. We all know that is the hardest part about search engine traffic... return visitors.

Best Outbound Link strategies:
The best practice is to find the educational and non-profit related sites that can help your visitors with non commercial aspects of their research. And if those sites are ranked well for your related keyword terms then that will also help your rankings.

Link within the body text where possible. This gives your visitors the link when they need it. It is not just a buried link at the bottom of the navigation. It also is a more valuable page location for search engines. It gives the link more weight.
